What Is a Dental Implant?

Designed to look and function like natural teeth, dental implants are a type of tooth restoration that can provide you with beautiful and long-lasting results. The implant post acts like a tooth root, stimulating the jaw bone and providing stability to the replacement tooth. The post supports a custom crown, which is attached with a connective piece called an abutment. By replacing the entire structure of a tooth, from root to crown, dental implants keep the jawbone stimulated to prevent bone loss or facial sagging.

You can replace a single tooth with a dental implant or restore your entire smile. As long as the amount of bone in the jaw can support an implant and you are healthy enough to undergo a general surgical procedure, you are likely a great candidate for dental implants.

Types of Dental Implants

At Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of Cincinnati, we offer a variety of dental implants from the top manufacturers, including Straumann® and Nobel Biocare. There are many types of dental implant treatments and tooth replacement options available to fit your restorative needs.

  • Single Tooth Replacement. A dental implant can be placed anywhere in the mouth. Because dental implants replace the entirety of the tooth structure, a single dental implant is strong enough to replace a front tooth, canine, or molar.
  • Multiple Tooth Replacement. We can use multiple individual implants or an implant-supported bridge to restore multiple teeth.
  • Immediate Implants. With enough healthy jaw bone, your oral surgeon can insert a dental implant the same day as a tooth extraction. Same-day implants are ideal for saving money and time, and they prevent the need to go without a tooth.
  • Full-Arch Restoration. Multiple dental implants can be placed in the dental arch and used to support a fixed prosthesis. The result is a brand new, secure, fully functioning arch of teeth that eliminates the need for removable dentures.
  • Zygomatic Implants. Zygomatic dental implants are an option for patients who have experienced severe jaw bone loss. Instead of being placed in the jaw bone, these implants with longer posts are inserted into the cheek bone, or zygomatic bone.

When you visit our office for your consultation, we will explore your options and determine the right type of implant for your oral health and treatment goals.

Dental Implant Surgery

We understand the anxiety that can accompany any type of dental procedure. We prioritize your comfort and offer many anesthesia and sedation options to provide you with a calm, comfortable, and positive surgical experience. During your consultation, your oral surgeon will develop a custom treatment plan based on 3D images of your mouth and jaw. These images will ensure the precise placement of your implants and superior results. We will help you select the right type of anesthesia, walk you through your procedure, and answer any questions.

When you arrive at our office on the day of your procedure, we will administer your choice of anesthesia. Once it has taken effect, your oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue, insert the implant post, and place sutures as needed. Then, you will rest until the anesthesia wears off and we feel you are ready to go home.

We will likely attach a temporary crown to the implant post, which you will wear until the implant heals, which may take several months. When you are ready, your restorative dentist will attach the final crown. If the final crown is ready by the time of your surgical procedure, we can attach it at this time.

Reviews From Our Dental Implants Patients

Bill Reviews His Dental Implants Procedure

Watch Review

"Hi, my name is Bill. I came from Anderson Township to see Dr. Seghi for both an extraction and a dental implant. When I first walked in here, I felt very comfortable. It was very inviting. The staff was very friendly. Dr. Seghi's guy who really explains things from the very minute detail to the big picture, and it was very reassuring for him to tell me exactly what was going to happen, what I was going to feel, and what to expect throughout the entire process. My quality of life is fantastic with the implants. I can eat anything from peanut brittle to an apple to steak. I'm very confident in my smile. My overall experience here has been phenomenal. I would highly recommend Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of Cincinnati to my friends in Lebanon."

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dental implants painful?

Because we use anesthesia and sedation, you can expect to not feel any pain during the procedure. Afterwards, some discomfort can be expected as your mouth heals. Most patients can manage pain with over-the-counter pain medications and by following the provided post-operative instructions carefully.

What is the difference between a flipper tooth and a dental implant?

A flipper tooth is a temporary, removable denture most commonly used by patients who have undergone an injury and are waiting for a more permanent solution. Dental implants are long-term replacements that look and feel like natural teeth. Some patients choose to wear a flipper tooth for many years, while others switch to a dental implant for comfort and health benefits.

Can you get gum disease with dental implants?

Just like natural teeth, the risk of gum disease, or periodontal disease, is still present with dental implants. You can prevent gum disease by brushing and flossing regularly, and by seeing your general dentist for regular checkups.

What should I not do after my dental implant procedure?

After dental implant surgery, you should avoid hot liquids and hot foods and chew on the opposite side of the mouth or away from the implant while you heal. Do not vigorously rinse your mouth or disturb the wound, and restrict your activity to prevent bleeding. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you are taking opioid pain medication. Follow your instructions closely for more tips on what to do and not to do, and contact our office if you have questions.
