What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a type of tooth restoration that is made of a titanium implant post, a connective abutment, and a custom crown. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, multiple missing teeth, or a full arch of teeth. They are the only tooth restoration option designed to look and feel like natural teeth. Because the implant post is inserted into the jaw bone and acts as a tooth root, implants preserve the integrity of the jaw and prevent bone loss and facial sagging.

Compared to removable dentures which rest on the bony ridge in the mouth, dental implants are a much more secure and comfortable option. Your implant will stay in place at all times and require no special care beyond regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits. Dental implants require a sturdy foundation, so as long as you have a sufficient amount of bone in your jaw to support the implant, you are likely a great candidate.

Types of Dental Implants

There are many types of tooth replacement options that offer solutions for a variety of restorative needs. At Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Specialists of Cincinnati, we offer implants designed by top manufacturers, including Straumann® and Nobel Biocare.

  • Single Tooth Replacement. Dental implants are strong enough to replace a single tooth anywhere in the mouth, including front teeth, canines, and even molars.
  • Multiple Tooth Replacement. If you are missing several teeth, your oral surgeon can place multiple implants or an implant supported-bridge.
  • Immediate Implant. If you are having a tooth extracted and have adequate jaw bone, we can place an implant immediately following extraction. This option eliminates the need for a separate procedure, saving you time and money.
  • Full-Arch Restoration. A fixed prosthesis supported by dental implants can be placed in one or both dental arches. The results are a completely new, fully functioning set of teeth.
  • Zygomatic Implants. Whereas traditional implants are inserted into the jaw, zygomatic implants are inserted into the zygomatic bone, or cheek bone. These implants are ideal for patients who lack sufficient upper jaw bone.

During your consultation, we will evaluate your oral health, discuss your restoration goals, and determine the right type of dental implant for your needs.

Dental Implant Surgery

During your first visit, one of our oral surgeons will work with you to develop a custom treatment plan. 3D images will be taken of your mouth and jaw to ensure the precise placement of your implants. We will also discuss your options for anesthesia to ensure a calm, comfortable surgical experience.

On the day of your procedure, we will walk you through each step of your operation before administering your chosen form of sedation. Your surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue, then insert the implant post. Sutures will be placed as needed and we will send you home after the anesthesia wears off.

We will often place a temporary crown for you to wear during the healing period. It will take several months for the implant to fuse with the jaw bone. Once healed, your restorative dentist will remove the temporary crown and attach your final crown. If the final crown is ready by the time of your procedure, we can attach it during your surgical visit.

Cost of Dental Implants

The cost of dental implants varies depending on your procedure's complexity, insurance coverage, the number of implants you need, and your choice of anesthesia. "Hi, I'm Nancy, and this is my son, Matthew. We live in the Cincinnati area. We've all had teeth extracted and implants. People at the desk are always very, very welcoming. Everybody addressed him directly and made sure he knew he was the one that they were concerned about. I have a lot of respect for Dr. Lucas, who is highly skilled but yet very compassionate and caring and wants the best for each of his patients. I feel like Matt's quality of life is so much better. I would absolutely recommend this practice, and I have recommended it not only to people who have someone with a disability in their family, but also to just anyone. You'll be listened to, respected, and your care will be outstanding."

Frequently Asked Questions

What are dental implants made of?

Traditional dental implants are made of non-toxic titanium that is durable and lightweight. This specialized metal is ideal because of its ability to fuse directly with the jawbone. Titanium implants also have a high success rate and a high resistance to corrosion.

How do I take care of my dental implant?

Dental implants require no special care beyond good oral hygiene habits. Keep your teeth and gums healthy with regular brushing and flossing, and with proper care, your implant can last a lifetime.

Who is not a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants may not be suited for patients with extensive jaw bone loss, severe periodontal disease, or other health conditions that may suppress their immune system. If you are capable of undergoing a general surgical procedure and have a healthy jaw, you are likely eligible for dental implants. Even if bone loss has occurred, our surgeons can rebuild the jaw using bone grafts, allowing many more patients to qualify for implant-based treatment.

Are dental implants painful?

Dental implant surgery is performed using anesthesia, so you will not feel discomfort during the procedure. After surgery, some degree of discomfort is to be expected during the healing process, as with any type of surgery. Once healed, your implant will not cause any pain and will feel just like a natural tooth.
