Our patients’ health and safety are top priorities, and as board-certified health specialists, we are highly qualified to diagnose and treat facial injuries of varying degrees for patients of all ages. In addition to practicing in our offices, our oral surgeons are on staff at local hospitals to provide emergency room coverage for facial injuries.
Types of Facial Injuries
There are many injuries that can affect the oral and maxillofacial regions resulting from a slip or fall, sport or car accident, domestic violence, or a work-related injury. Types of facial trauma conditions include:
- Cuts to the outside of the head, neck, or face
- Intraoral lacerations
- Burns to the head, neck, mouth, or face
- Knocked-out teeth
- Fractured cheek, nose, jaws, or eye sockets
Facial injuries vary in severity, but even if the injury is minor, you should be seen by an oral surgeon to treat the injury and make sure there are no hidden complications.
Treating Facial Trauma
No two facial trauma cases are alike. Therefore, our surgeons will create a custom plan for your needs and explain all of your treatment options so you can make an informed decision about your care. Our offices are equipped with state-of-the-art 3D imaging technology to help our surgeons create detailed treatment plans. When treating facial injuries, we will take 3D scans during the first visit to our office.
Prior to undergoing surgery, we will help you select the right anesthesia for your comfort and the complexity of your procedure. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we are qualified to administer local anesthesia, laughing gas, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Sutures are used to repair cuts in or around the mouth. Your surgeon will take special care to avoid facial nerves, salivary glands, and other facial structures. To treat facial burns, topical ointments or soft tissue grafting may be necessary.
Bone Injuries
Just like any bone in your body, facial bones can become cracked or broken. However, you cannot wear a cast around the face like you would for a broken arm or leg. Instead, your surgeon will use plates or screws to reposition and secure the broken facial bones. Some patients are required to wear braces following facial reconstruction or orthognathic surgery to align the teeth within the jaw’s new position.
When performing facial reconstructive surgery, your surgeon will make incisions from within the mouth whenever possible to reduce visible scarring. In addition to helping the facial bones heal, we want to achieve pleasing aesthetic results that you can feel confident about.
